BioPhenolics Inc. Advances Sustainable Chemical Manufacturing with Precision Fermentation Platform
Tsukuba, Japan — BioPhenolics Inc., a deeptech startup founded at the University of Tsukuba, is accelerating the transition to sustainable chemical manufacturing through its proprietary microbial metabolic engineering platform. The company’s precision fermentation technology enables the high-efficiency bioproduction of phenolic compounds—critical raw materials traditionally derived from petroleum.
Co-founded by Professor Naoki Takaya and bioprocess expert Noriyuki Nukui, BioPhenolics is built on decades of research and a shared commitment to transforming the chemical industry from “pollution and health hazards” to “green and sustainable.” The company’s pilot-scale production facility is now operational, with plans underway to develop a novel bench-scale fermenter system and expand toward commercial biofactories in Southeast Asia.
“Our mission is to offer scalable, drop-in replacements for petroleum-based phenolics,” said CEO Noriyuki Nukui. “We’re not concept-driven—we’re production-driven. Our technology is designed for real-world industrial performance.”
BioPhenolics collaborates with global chemical manufacturers and cosmetics companies to co-develop custom aromatic compounds through R&D partnerships. Their offerings have drawn interest from early-stage venture capital firms, family offices, and strategic investors seeking exposure to synthetic biology, biomanufacturing, and sustainability tech.
The company was recently recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for its innovation in circular economy solutions.
